Record prolific galaxy
Record fruitful and at the same time distant galaxy discovered by scientists.
Astronomers working with the space telescope Hubble discovered the most distant and most ancient galaxy, the distance to which reliably confirmed by spectroscopic methods - we now see it for what it was after only 700 million years after the Big Bang, according to a paper published in the journal Nature.
Its authors, Stephen Finkelstein at the University of Texas at Austin and his colleagues used data from the infrared spectrograph on the 10-meter Keck telescope and the data from the space telescope Hubble to determine the redshift and distance of 43 galaxies previously selected as candidates for very distant project CANDELS. Among them was a galaxy z8_GND_5296, which proved to be the most profound.
Line (its spectrum) at a wavelength of 1.0343 micron are likely Lyman-alpha line, which gives this galaxy redshift z = 7,51, which corresponds to the age of 700 million years after the Big Bang - the article says .
Previously, astronomers have claimed the discovery of UDFy-38135539 galaxy with a redshift of 10.3, which corresponds to the age of 600 million years after the Big Bang, and the galaxy MACS 1149-JD offset 9.6.
However, these data were obtained by indirect measurements.
For a more precise measurement is required to trace the Lyman-alpha line in its spectrum, left its absorption of light in the interstellar gas. The line is most strongly shifted towards the red side indicates redshift closer galaxy which can not be. In accordance with these criteria, the most distant galaxies have a redshift less than 7,215, and so z8_GND_5296 recognized record holder.
Scientists note that the galaxy is different all-time high productivity - the number of stars that appear in it, corresponds to 330 solar masses per year, which is about 100 times larger than in the Milky Way.
