Support the development of a solar flare SHIELD FOR EARTH

But if the high activity of the mentioned spots subsides, we can expect surprises. Due to the rotation of the sun on November 12-13, this area will be near the center of the solar disk. With this arrangement, a new outbreak of the same force and subsequent emission of solar material cause in the world at least powerful auroras.


But the consequences can be serious.


NASA recalls that in 1859 a number of telegraph station was engulfed in fire. They emerged from the currents induced by a strong magnetic storm, in turn caused by a solar flare and coronal mass ejection monstrous (Carrington Event).


To minimize the damage from such a disaster, NASA is developing a project Solar Shield (Solar Shield). It relies on the computing power of interagency center simulation (CCMC), located in the center of Goddard (Goddard Space Flight Center).


The purpose of the enterprise - the prediction of the effects of solar storms up almost to a single transformer.

CCMC almost immediately predicts the force fields and currents in the upper atmosphere of the Earth and spread them on the ground (so-called geomagnetic induced currents). This information can be promptly transferred to the grid, so that at the peak of the storm have been disabled most vulnerable sites or terminated affecting humans repairs.


False alarms of such companies can be costly, but the price is not less than the accident. So the accuracy of the forecast here has great value.


Solar flares in the most severe cases, can damage electrical transformers. The official start of the project, in fact - a declaration of the idea, was given in 2007. Next, the scientists were response plan to attack, collecting ideas and technologies that could be incorporated into the panel, experienced some of its components, in particular, were run through a computer model of solar-terrestrial relationships.


In 2008, in a crude and simplified experimental predictions of the machine is working and has been tested on a range of events. In April 2010, the team reached the final report to NASA on - only now the project has gained more or less final form.


So while the Solar board as a ready-to-use end-user product does not exist. We can say that it is in beta, and its creators are just gaining experience to refine the software.


Meanwhile, some companies have already placed in their power grids sensors that can detect effects of solar storms for power equipment. This data is supplied to the Solar Shield project to validate the predictions. The trouble is that as long as the sun is not very active and really bright flashes a little.


Maybe more things will change, and scientists will score a lot of specimens of its portfolio of solar flares. But what is interesting. What about the level of solar activity in the coming and subsequent cycles of a curious prediction: sunspots can do abyss and shone for many years to become a good boy.
